Creative Headshots that Show Your Unique Personality
I’ve talked before about the importance of having a good headshot. With the value of social media not only for socializing but also for employment opportunities, having a great headshot can be the start of creating that important first impression with employers, with clients and even just a boost to your own self-esteem. But what if you want something more than just a nice picture of yourself. The next step is having a headshot that tells a bit more about who you are.
What do you do when a self-proclaimed science and comic book geek wants a headshot?
The answer is you grab the lab coat, the superhero t-shirt, and head to the “science” building in Pittsburgh, Mellon Institute.
This particular session is very special to me because it was for my husband. Almost one year ago, my husband’s first book was published, Faith Across the Multiverse: Parables from Modern Science (available in paperback and e-book on Amazon). It was a huge accomplishment for him and as his wife, I had the unique experience of watching him work through the whole process- from generating ideas, researching topics (that might have involved watching a few superhero movies), and then watching as he worked at finding a publisher and then being accepted by the publisher. I had never expected it to be such a long process. But the result has been amazing.
Faith Across the Multiverse by Andy Walsh
It’s a unique book that only he could write. Sharing his knowledge of Christianity, science, and science in pop-culture seen in science fiction movies and comic books. There’s something special when you see your husband’s book listing on Amazon. When you see him at his first book signing. When you see him giving talks to students and faculty on faith and science and superheroes. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year. It hasn’t been easy but it’s definitely been a year with the scales tipped on the good side.
And he was way overdue for a new headshot.

SESSION TYPE: on location short session
SUBJECT: creative professional, Pittsburgh author
LOCATION: Oakland, Pittsburgh
Because his book is so unique (and he is so unique) we had to be a little more creative with his headshots. He has a Facebook page for his book as well as other marketing opportunities so it made sense to have a variety for him.
For his session, we started out with some more casual and yet, still formal shots at the Mellon columns. This was significant because he worked in a lab at the Mellon Institute as an undergrad. (That’s also when we first started dating).
Then it was time for some fun and creative shots!
A large part of Andy’s book talks about comic book characters and this shirt represents Multiple Man. This is one of his favorite characters and I loved incorporating that into his session. Of course, we also had the lab coat too. While Andy is a doctor with a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology he’ll be the first to tell you, he’s not that kind of doctor. He primarily works with computers and large amounts of data for Health Monitoring, software company in Pittsburgh.
So the big finale of the session was creating our own Multiple Man inspired shot. With a little bit of photoshop help, I think it turned out pretty well.
