“There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them” ~ Vicki Baum

Last month, I photographed some young ballet dancers who were celebrating the end of another year learning and growing and dancing.  It was a chance for them to demonstrate what they’ve mastered while still having a little bit of fun.  I love those sessions just as much as the dancers do but I also wanted to create an opportunity for dancers (and non-dancers) to have a moment to dream about what it will be like when they are dancing on stage as ballerinas.  For most of these dancers, that is their dream and at times, it seems so far away.

These sessions were intended to bring that dream a little closer to reality.

The goal for these sessions is to encourage the girls to have fun and be free with their expressions.  It wasn’t about the steps but how the movement makes them feel.

And I had a couple of special friends who wanted to do this together.  As a photographer, I found it so fascinating to see how each girl moved and expressed themselves differently.  Their personalities each came through the entire session.  And they seemed to enjoy watching each other take their turn in front of my camera.

What’s even better?  With a friend about the same size, you can trade dresses!
