Summer Family Portraits in Erie

I love photographing family portraits in the summer.  You don’t have to worry about being cold nature looking too dead.  Everything is green and warm and bright.  Bare feet are encouraged as well as snacks and toys.  And you can end your session by dipping your toes in a creek to cool off.  I’ll admit that I love fall with it warm sweaters and brightly colored leaves but I’m not ready to turn my back on summer.

I was so excited when a family from up near Erie contacted me about scheduling a session up there!  My Erie sessions have been mostly at my Aunt’s house- a gorgeous farmhouse with beautiful apple trees and fields in her backyard, it’s hard to find a place that is more suitable for portraits (plus my aunt always treats me to a delicious and gluten-free lunch).  But for this session, we decided to head into Erie and check out Frontier Park.  And such a gorgeous place it is!!

The Perfect Spot for Little Ones

Photographing little ones can be challenging.  Anytime when your subjects are under 5 years old, you have to be ready to think on your feet and keep things going.  This is why this little park was just perfect.

  • First, it wasn’t a big park.  This meant that there were lots of interesting places to visit in a relatively short distance.
  • Lots of interesting spots- yes, this is its own plus.  In our little walk, we visited a field that was mowed but also had some taller grasses, a wooded area with a gravel path, a wooden bridge, and a little creek.
  • A playground for the reward.  Yes, having a playground back up the hill by the parking lot was the perfect reward for after the session.

All of these things helped me to help the littlest ones to get comfortable with me and give me some great smiles.  My process was simple.  We started in a spot.  I tried a few poses and interactions.  When the little one got fussy, we went for a walk to find something new to see.

So you don’t have to wait until the leaves start to change to get beautiful pictures of your family!  There’s still time (and sunny warm weather) to schedule.  Are you on my email list?  People who sign up get the latest information on session offers and information (like my visits up to Erie).  Contact me to sign up!
