I mentioned a while back that I was stepping out and trying something new.
When I first started my business, I was willing to shoot anything and everything. No photography request was turned down. I wanted to get better and the more you shoot, the more you learn and the better you get. It wasn’t until I was in business for a few years that I realized there were sessions that I dreaded. I would get so anxious before them. I would feel frustrated and disappointed afterwards. I hadn’t yet learned the magical notion that I was not the photographer for all people. So I recoiled and cut back on so much of what I did.
No weddings.
No events.
No engagements.
No seniors.
I would focus on little kids, their families and newborns.
I loved it. It made sense to and made me a better photographer (and less stressed out mama and wife). Soon I started focusing back on my love of storytelling and trying to bring that into my photography. Then I started thinking about the story of my newborns. Starting with the newborn session is fine but there can be so much more to the story- the anticipation of expectant parents, the new big brother or big sister that is watching this change happen, the mother, feeling tired and often uncomfortable but looking way more beautiful then she might realize. Yes, I thought about these things and saw the huge value in offering maternity sessions so I started offering them to my newborn clients and I’m so excited to be able to tell a more complete story of these new little ones and how they join their families.
This is going to be a long post because it’s going to tell that story…
Beginnings
First off, take 1 adorable and giggly 2 year old little boy…
and 1 beautiful mom-to-be…
and 1 sweet daddy…
and you get an amazing maternity and family session, perfect for showing off how excited they were for their new little girl.
Being 2 is so exciting and this little guy was happy as long as he could keep moving. He did take some time to knock “hello” to the baby in mommy’s tummy.
It was so much fun hanging out with this little guy but we also took some time for mom to have some moments to herself. Isn’t she just gorgeous!
You would have never guessed this was a chilly day in April!
Maternity Sessions
I love doing maternity sessions and being able to tell a more complete story of the start of this new life. That’s why all newborn sessions have the option of adding on a maternity mini session- either just for mom, mom and dad, or mom, dad and siblings. Contact me if you’re expecting and ready to tell the story of this little life.
