First Holy Communion at Saint Alexis in the North Hills
First holy communions, like many of our rituals, looked different in 2020. Even with the differences life continued, milestones happened, and I was happy to be able to document them.
First Holy Communions are typically held in the spring. With many churches locked down for much of the year, this year looked different. Many churches celebrated these moments over the summer, outside in church parking lots or in gardens on church properties.
I was so excited when this young man’s mom reached out about trying to schedule some last-minute First Holy Communion photos. I photographed her daughter’s portraits just a few years ago (on another chilly and windy day) during more typical times. This session was scheduled quickly because, throughout the year, we were never sure if events like this would have to be canceled due to an increase in case numbers. That has been a large part of life during the pandemic.
We met on a windy but sunny day at Saint Alexis. Saint Alexis Church in the North Hills is a beautiful campus. There are several buildings all surrounding a beautiful garden on the property, it was a perfect location.
The details
For First Holy Communion portraits, I love to take time to capture the details- the rosary and a prayer book. And as the photographer, I’m always looking for those special spots. Because of Covid, being in the church was discouraged but it was still possible to capture the reverence of the moment.
This kid has the best hair! And check out that model stare!
