Family Storybook Session in Schenley Park

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

I’ll let you in on a secret.  I believe in magic.

Maybe it’s because I’m a bit like Peter Pan and refuse to grow up or that the world is scary and depressing without the hope of magic.

Maybe I just can’t imagine myself the kind of adult who only believes in what they can see with their own eyes but for whatever the reason, I’ll continue to believe in magic and do my part to help create it whenever I can.

And this family session was truly magical!

Making Magic: A Different Family Portrait

Mom contacted me for a creative family session and had a specific vision in mind.  She wanted to combine nature with whimsical costumes and headdresses that were inspired by the idea of incorporating pagan influences and natural adornment.  She wanted a different kind of family portrait.  A portrait that showed their creativity, imagination and playfulness.  It was very important to have play be part of their session.

“We encourage creative expression and not worrying about we’re “supposed to do”.”

I was immediately excited by the idea and eager to work with them to create this magical session.  We traded some ideas online using Pinterest and other web pages and then decided on the location.  Schenley Park with its paths down into Panther Hollow and ancient looking stone bridges was a perfect location.  They gathered up their costumes and props- wooden swords, dried flowers, headpieces, antlers, wings and cloaks.

I loved sitting back as an observer and watching this family “play” together.  It was not about getting the perfect pose.  This was about capturing their interactions with each other and the characters that their costumes brought out.

I firmly believe that family portraits should represent your family.  Your family portrait should be unique to you.  When you consider your clothing, location, and activity, you can achieve that unique portrait that can still be a beautiful work of art.  But you don’t have to come up with it all by yourself.  Let me help you to create that unique portrait experience for your family or your child.   Let’s make magic together!
