It never fails to make me smile watching these little birthday boys and girls experience their first cake. There are some that dig right in and grin from ear to ear at the delicious mess that they not only get to make but also get to eat. Then there are others who are a little more reserved, more cautious as they approach their cake. They experience the icing one finger at a time before really digging into it. In that moment, I can’t help but wonder if they might be future scientists, observing their world and looking at details in order to make some discovery.
This recent session was a mixture of the two. The little birthday boy was cautious approaching his cake. Mama had to give him a little encouragement. Then he dug in but he was content to just feel the squishy-ness of the cake and icing without any interest in tasting it. Again mama had to show him that it was in fact yummy cake and icing to eat. As you’ll see, once he got over that initial hesitation, he was all in.

I made sure to take some pre-cake photos because even after a quick kitchen sink wash-up, this little guy had blue fingers!
